The 79th Annual Continental District
Scouters Recognition Dinner was hosted by Troop/Pack 367 at New Hanover Lutheran Church on April 27th 2013. The event is held each year to honor the tireless volunteers of the Continental District
, who make Scouting an enriching experience for the youth in our communities. The evening was filled with food, fellowship, and fun while we surprised and recognized the distinguished service of our fellow Scouters.
George Steckhouse was not only the master of ceremonies but also received the Commissioner Award of Excellence.
All of the scouters, scouts, families and significant others present were then reconized for their service to scouting in our communities. Standing as thier roles were annouced, and seating by years of service. Many in the group having more than 20 years. As the years increased to 25, 30, 35, 40, 457850 or less many sat but 4 individuals were still standing, Al Jenkin sat at 55 years or less with 53 years, Lee Wesner and Joe Brooke sat at 60 years or less with 58 years each, leaving Roy Geiger standing with 71 years of dedicated service. Unit Scouter Awards and Unit Leader Awards of Merit were then awarded. (List of recipients will be added when available)
Timothy Murray was presented the William D. Boyce New-Unit Organizer Award for successfully organizing a new unit chartered to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 780.
The history of the James E. West Fellowship Award and past recipients were recognized, including Kevin Lawlor, who passed away after receiving this award last year. To honor Kevin and since it happened to be his birthday, the group sang Happy Birthday for Kevin. Link to Happy Birthday Kevin 0:36
Joe Brooke and Chuck Tomlin were the 2013 recipients of the James E. West Fellowship Award for their many years of dedicated service to scouting. (videos available, will be posted soon)
Jackie Smith was awarded the District Award of Merit for her many roles supporting both cub and boy scouts in the district and developing and running the Tiger Hunt orientering event for many years.
Jeff Canon was also awarded the District Award of Merit for his many years and roles supporting scouting in the district.
During the event a silent auction of scouting memorabilia was held to benefit the Continental District's James E. West Fellowship fund. More than $200 was raised and will be put towards the 2014 awards.
The district would like to thank Troop/Pack 367 for hosting this event, all those who attended the event who helped make it an enjoyable eveining, and all those who continue to make the Scouting program available for the youth in our communities.
