Wood Badge is a training course for Scouters which finally results in their receiving a certificate, a small neckerchief, a leather slide, and two small wooden beads on a leather thong. Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, directed the first course in 1919 and gave each of the participants one of the beads which he had captured from the African chieftain Dinizulu. Thus did the course name develop, for its symbol was literally a badge of wood.

Wood Badge is, further, Scouting's premier training course. Baden-Powell designed it so that Scouters could learn, in as practical a way possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. It is first and foremost, learning by doing. The members of the course are formed into patrols and these into a troop.  The entire troop lives in the out-of-doors for a week, camping, cooking their own meals, and practicing Scout skills.

Wood Badge 2016

Musser Scout Reservation, Pennsburg, PA

Course dates April 29-May 1 & June 4-6*

You must attend both weekends and complete your post-course project ("Ticket") to get your "Beads".

The Wood Badge course, Scouting’s premier leadership experience, brings together leaders from all areas of Scouting-Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Sea Scouts, Venturing-and all levels of Boy Scouts of America professional staff. Reflecting the best of over a century of Scouting experience, the course also draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful outdoor leadership organizations throughout the country.

In order to have the course proceed BSA requires 30 fully paid participants 30 days prior to the start of the course. That makes our 2016 commitment date March 29, 2016. On Line registration will open around the first of the year.

 $240.00 EARLY BIRD before 3/19

$300 FULL FEE after 3/29

A major concern of past participants has been the cost of the course. In an effort to provide assistance the Training Committee sponsored a Wood Badge reunion last July. This reunion was conducted to provide service to the Nelson Training Center at Musser Scout Reservation and raised approximately $700 to be used for Camperships for up to half of the cost of the course. Look for the application online soon.

Last year The Council Training Committee sponsored a Council Wood Badge Reunion at Nelson Training Center, Musser Scout Reservation for the benefit of Wood Badge Camperships.

Over twenty Woodbadgers participated in a Wood Badge Gilwell field ceremony and then in a few hours of service adding stone to the Pavilion to be ready for upcoming NYLT Courses, and repairs to Maclean Lodges gutters and drainage system.

Following the mornings work all were treated to a hearty picnic barbecue luncheon. The culminating activity was the beading of the Fox Patrol of N5-525-13 and a rousing “Back to Gilwell.”

In 2016 the Wood Badge Reunion and Picnic will be on July 17, 2016. All Woodbadgers are invited. Since the Reunion and Picnic is for the benefit of Wood Badge Scholarships donations are requested. A page on the COLBSA website will be set up shortly to allow anyone to donate to The Wood Badge Scholarship Fund. The funds derived from the 2015 Reunion will fund Camperships for the upcoming Course.
